With a bit of math, you can calculate that Anders hoarded 513,614 pennies across 45 years. This would have taken an average daily collection of 31 pennies. Anders had justified the saying, “See a penny, pick it up. Then all day long, you’ll have good luck.”

Committed Hoarding

Anders confessed that had he not been denied coverage for his penny collection by his home insurance, he would have continued to hoard them. His original goal was to fill five water jugs measuring five gallons each. Once he hit that goal, however, he found that he was unable to stop.

Anders’ case was incredible, but he is one of many people in the world who are committed hoarders. There was also a story out of Shenyang, China, regarding Mr. Gan, who supposedly covered the cost of a new car with 20,000 notes and 660,000 coins. Each note and coin was worth one yuan, which comes to about 16 American cents. If you thought that Anders had an incredible collection, it paled in comparison to the 8,800-pound hoard belonging to Mr. Gan!
